Setting Up Electric and Water Utilities in Richmond, KY
Moving into a new rental in Richmond comes with a short list of calls to make before move-in day, and utilities are usually at the top of that list.
Richmond splits its utility services across a couple of providers rather than one all-in-one company, Electricity in Richmond Kentucky are billed separately from water, gas, and sewer, so expect separate utility statements each month from each provider. It helps to know whom to call for what before your first night in your new place. Once you sign with our team at Diamond Apartments, we’ll help guide the way, but here is a good place to start as you plan ahead:
Electric Service Through Kentucky Utilities (KU)
Kentucky Utilities—better known locally as KU—supplies electricity to Richmond and most of Madison County.
Keep your new address, move-in date, and identification handy, as KU will need that information to place the service in your name. To open an account, call 1-800-981-0600 or register online at lge-ku.com. Complete the setup several days before moving so the electricity is on when you arrive.
Water, Sewer, and Gas Through Richmond Utilities
Richmond Utilities handles water and sewer service for homes and rentals within city limits, and it's a separate call from your KU electric setup. The Richmond Utilities water company also offers online bill pay for added convenience. Some properties outside city limits get water and sewer through Madison County Utilities.
Depending on where you're renting, natural gas may also come through Richmond Utilities, though some areas of Madison County are served by Delta Natural Gas Company instead.
Note: If you're not sure which provider serves your specific address, ask your Diamond Apartments property manager, since they're familiar with the utility setup for each of our rental locations.
Internet and Cable Options in Richmond
Spectrum services most of Richmond with cable and internet plans. Often, for first-time customers, they even offer a discounted rate, which is especially helpful for students dealing with a handful of other expenses that come with a recent move.
Some areas are also covered by Metronet or Kinetic by Windstream.
Cellular providers like AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon are another popular option, but because service may vary from one address to another, we recommend checking with the provider directly. For some rural areas, Starlink is also a viable option for internet access.
Your property manager can also be a great resource, especially if you're moving into a unit where the previous tenant also had Internet services.
Trash and Recycling Pickup
Your address determines who handles trash pickup.
Rentals inside Richmond city limits receive service through the City of Richmond Public Works Department, and household trash must be placed in a can or cart rather than left in loose bags. Properties in parts of Madison County and Berea generally use private haulers such as Rumpke, Republic Services, or WM (Waste Management). If you’re unsure which service covers your rental, your Diamond Apartments property manager can give you the correct information.
